Osmosis is the process by which solvents (such as water) move through a semipermeable membrane from a more dilute solution to a more concentrated solution. This occurs to equalize the concentration of solutes on both sides of the membrane.
When there is a difference in the concentration of solutes between two solutions separated by a semipermeable membrane, water molecules will move from the area of lower solute concentration (the more dilute solution) to the area of higher solute concentration (the more concentrated solution) in an attempt to equalize the concentration on both sides of the membrane.
Osmosis plays an important role in biology, particularly in cell function and structure, where cells regulate the inflow and outflow of water to maintain an appropriate internal concentration of solutes. Osmosis is also used in industry and in water purification technologies as a method of removing impurities from water by passing the water through a semipermeable membrane that allows the passage of water molecules but blocks the passage of larger particles and dissolved substances. This process is called reverse osmosis and is often used to produce high-quality drinking water from brackish or salt water.

No 04– How does reverse osmosis work?
Reverse osmosis starts with the dirty water being passed over a sediment filter that cleans out coarse particles such as small stones, etc. It is then passed through a nanofilter and on to an activated carbon filter and on to stage 4 which consists of another nanofilter. Stage 5 is the osmosis membrane which removes harmful (pesticides, heavy metals, phosphate, nitrate etc.) and hardness-causing substances from the tap water.
How does reverse osmosis work?
Reverse osmosis works by creating a difference in pressure on each side of the membrane, which forces the water through the membrane and leaves impurities behind. The clean water stream is collected on one side of the membrane, while the waste materials are washed away on the other side. NOTE: All filters in an osmosis system are thus self-cleaning and do not need to be changed regularly.
