What is AISI 316?
A type of austenitic stainless steel that contains molybdenum, which gives it improved corrosion resistance, especially to chlorides and non-oxidizing acids. It is a popular alloy in industries such as food, construction and automotive due to its strength, weldability and corrosion resistance. The most common variant is AISI 316L, which has a lower carbon content to further improve weldability.
Features:
- Chemical composition: Contains approx. 16% chromium, 10% nickel and 2-3% molybdenum.
- Corrosion resistance: High resistance to corrosion, especially in aggressive environments such as salt water and acids, thanks to the molybdenum content.
- Strength: Has a good tensile strength of 500-700 N/mm².
- Weldability: Generally good weldability, but the 316L variety is recommended for welding as the lower carbon content prevents intergranular corrosion.
- Temperature range: Suitable for use up to 550 °C and also for low temperatures.
- The food industry: Due to its hygienic nature and corrosion resistance.
- Construction Industry: For various construction purposes.
- Automotive industry: In various components.
- Marine applications: Due to resistance to salt water. Comparison with AISI 304
Molybdenum: AISI 304 does not contain molybdenum, while 316 does.

- Price: 316 is more expensive than 304 due to the addition of molybdenum.
